Food insuecurity has increased in the Rockaways since SuperStorm Sandy's landfall. However, the Rockaways has been a food desert for a long time.

Only 30% of Rockaway residents total retail needs are addressed today in the Rockaways. This means that 70% of purchases by Rockaway residents must be made off the peninsula.

There is a need to improve the supply chains in the Rockaways, in general. However, because food and nutrition are so crucial to health and human security, residents of the Rockaways are placing a high priority on making hgh qualtiy, reasonably priced food available in the Rockaways first.

The Food and Nutrition working group is working to solve these gaps with specific solutions now.

USDA program keeps extra COVID-era money for fruits, veggies U.S. agriculture officials proposed changes Thursday to the federal program that helps pay the grocery bills for low-income pregnant women, babies and young children, including extending a bump in payments for fresh fruits and vegetables allowed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The update also adds more whole grains, canned fish and non-dairy options to their shopping carts. The effort is aimed at expanding the number and type of healthy foods available to families who get assistance from the Agriculture Department’s program known as WIC, officials said.
