Food insuecurity has increased in the Rockaways since SuperStorm Sandy's landfall.  However, the Rockaways has been a food desert for a long time.  

Only 30% of Rockaway residents total retail needs are addressed today in the Rockaways.  This means that 70% of purchases by Rockaway residents must be made off the peninsula.  

There is a need to improve the supply chains in the Rockaways, in general.  However, because food and nutrition are so crucial to health and human security, residents of the Rockaways are placing a high priority on making hgh qualtiy, reasonably priced food available in the Rockaways first. 

The Food and Nutrition working group is working to solve these gaps with specific solutions now.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — U.S. food banks already dealing with increased demand from families sidelined by the pandemic now face a new challenge — surging food prices and supply chain issues walloping the nation.
